IFC and Shudder Acquire Horror Debut 'Breeder' Ahead of Tribeca Premiere
Independent Film Company (IFC) and the horror-focused streaming service Shudder have jointly acquired the distribution rights to Alex Goyette’s debut feature, 'Breeder.' The film, which is set to make its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival, follows a financially struggling college student who is lured to a remote ranch by an eccentric poodle breeder under the guise of research funding, only to discover a sinister reality awaiting him.
The acquisition covers a broad international footprint, including the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. The film features an ensemble cast led by Daniel Doheny, Dot Marie Jones, Maddie Phillips, and Tanaya Beatty. Following its festival debut, the companies have confirmed plans for a theatrical release scheduled for this fall, signaling a strategic push to capitalize on the growing appetite for high-concept independent horror.
This deal highlights the continued synergy between traditional independent distributors and genre-specific streaming platforms. By partnering with Shudder, IFC is positioning 'Breeder' to reach a dedicated horror audience while maintaining a theatrical presence, a hybrid release model that has become increasingly vital for mid-budget genre films. The acquisition underscores the industry's ongoing interest in emerging directorial talent, as Goyette both wrote and directed the project, marking a significant entry for the filmmaker into the commercial horror landscape.
