Friday marks 60 days since President Trump officially notified Congress of the U.S. military’s operations in Iran.

Democrats and some Republicans have voiced concerns about the conflict if it exceeds the 60-day threshold — the time limit covered by the War Powers Act during which the president can deploy U.S. forces without the authorization of Congress if there is an “imminent threat.”

The highly anticipated milestone has faced questions from lawmakers, as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth argued in a Senate hearing Thursday that the clock stopped when the U.S. and Iran agreed to a temporary ceasefire, which has been ongoing for weeks.

The House also passed a bill Thursday to fund the bulk of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), a major step toward ending the 10-week partial shutdown. The bill, signed by Trump later in the day, does not include funding for Border Patrol or Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Elsewhere, Maine Gov. Janet Mills’s (D) Thursday announcement that she would exit her state’s Senate race is prompting some Democratic senators to question Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-N.Y.) recruiting and broader political strategy heading into the midterms. Democrats are now coalescing around Graham Platner in Maine.

The president is traveling to Florida on Friday, first giving remarks at an event with seniors before later attending a dinner in West Palm Beach. The House and Senate are out.
