Proof of Concept Accelerator Names Second Cohort of Emerging Filmmakers
Proof of Concept, the industry-backed accelerator program dedicated to supporting women, trans, and nonbinary filmmakers, has officially unveiled its second class of participants. Founded by Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett, producer Coco Francini, and researcher Dr. Stacy L. Smith, the initiative aims to bridge the gap between short-form storytelling and feature-length production. With the continued support of Netflix, the program provides a vital pipeline for underrepresented voices to gain professional traction in a competitive industry.
The eight filmmakers selected for this year’s cohort—Taylor Bakken, Jessica Barr, Asmahan Bkerat, Rachel Goldberg, Jessica Kozak, Alejandra López, Sam Mandich, and Olivia Peace—will each receive a $50,000 grant to produce a short film. Beyond the financial backing, the program offers a comprehensive support system, including creative mentorship and direct access to industry leaders. These short films are intended to serve as "proof of concept" assets, helping the creators secure funding and development deals for larger feature films or episodic series.
This initiative is significant because it addresses a persistent structural challenge in Hollywood: the difficulty emerging directors face when attempting to transition from short-form projects to high-budget features. By providing both the capital and the professional network necessary to showcase their vision, Proof of Concept is actively lowering the barrier to entry for marginalized talent. The program’s commitment to a curated showcase later this year ensures that these filmmakers will have a high-visibility platform to present their work to potential investors and studio executives, ultimately fostering a more inclusive and diverse creative landscape.
