Astronomers have identified a third galaxy, designated DF9, that appears to be almost entirely devoid of dark matter. Located within the same cosmic chain as previously discovered galaxies DF2 and DF4, DF9 is significantly dimmer, yet its stellar motions provide strong evidence that it lacks the invisible mass typically required to bind galaxies together. By utilizing the Keck Cosmic Web Imager to track how stars move within the system, researchers confirmed that the galaxy’s mass is consistent with visible matter alone, rather than the dark matter-heavy profiles observed in the vast majority of the universe.

This discovery is significant because it challenges the standard cosmological model, which posits that dark matter acts as the essential 'glue' for galactic structure. While dark matter remains invisible to traditional sensors, its existence has long been inferred through the gravitational influence it exerts on visible stars and gas. The existence of galaxies like DF9 suggests that dark matter is not a universal requirement for galactic formation, forcing scientists to reconsider the mechanisms that govern how these structures evolve.

Researchers hypothesize that these unique, dark matter-deficient galaxies are the remnants of violent, ancient collisions between larger galaxies. In such high-energy events, ordinary matter and dark matter may have been physically separated, leaving behind these unusual, 'stripped' objects. This theory provides a compelling argument for the physical nature of dark matter; if it can be separated from ordinary matter during a collision, it suggests that dark matter is a distinct, tangible substance rather than merely a byproduct of alternative gravitational theories.
