Comedian Stephen Colbert demurred when asked about the time slot on CBS he will soon vacate not being replaced by a traditional late-night show.
“It’s none of my business,” Colbert said during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter when asked about “The Late Show” being replaced by Byron Allen’s “Comics Unleashed” on CBS.
“God bless him. I know Byron. We got to know each other last year, actually. He’s fascinating,” Colbert said of Allen. “When I found out, I wrote him the next morning and I said, “Hey, congrats. I heard you got the time. Good for you. Wouldn’t it be lovely if you could drop Mr. Carson a note,’” a reference to the deceased late-night host.
Colbert’s show is slated to end this month after Paramount canceled his program following the company’s merger with Skydance.
Paramount said at the time Colbert’s cancellation was a decision made for financial reasons, but critics of Larry and David Ellison, who own the company, have pointed to their warm relationship with the Trump administration and Colbert’s criticism of the president.
Colbert recently broke with his network after he said CBS told him he could not air an interview with Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico over concerns about the Federal Communications Commission’s “equal time” rule.
Colbert remains sharply critical of the Trump administration and CBS leadership.
“I don’t know what it’s going to be, and I don’t know what I can do to help other than what I did the last 11 years,” Colbert said on the future of late-night television. “But one night I’ll turn on the TV and probably no one will be there.”
