Sony Pictures helped brighten up CinemaCon with the first look at Klara and the Sun.
Jenna Ortega and Amy Adams star in Taika Waititi‘s feature adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro‘s dystopian sci-fi novel. The studio revealed Monday that the film is set for theatrical release on Oct. 23.
“This is a hopeful story about friendship and connection at a time when technology makes us feel so alone,” TriStar Pictures president Nicole Brown told the crowd. Klara and the Sun stars Ortega as Klara, a solar-powered robot whose purpose is to assist the lives of the humans around her.

“How will I know if my person and I are a good match?” Ortega asks in the trailer.
The footage shows Mia Tharia as Josie, a sickly girl who chooses to bring home Klara. This leads her mom, played by Adams, to ask skeptically, “This one? She looks tired.”
Waititi, whose most recent directorial effort was 2023’s Next Goal Wins, helmed the movie from a script he co-wrote with Dahvi Waller. Waititi produces alongside David Heyman, Jeffrey Clifford, Rosie Alison and Garrett Basch.
Ortega’s forthcoming features include The Gallerist and J.J. Abrams’ The Great Beyond.
Adams was recently seen in Nightbitch and Disenchanted. Her forthcoming features include At the Sea and Star Wars: Starfighter. She stars in the latter opposite Ryan Gosling, Matt Smith, Mia Goth and Aaron Pierre.
CinemaCon is the annual event for exhibitors and Hollywood studios that runs this year from April 13-16. It is the official convention of Cinema United.
