FBI Launches Kinetic Cyber Range to Simulate Real-World Digital Attacks

The FBI has unveiled a sophisticated 22,000-square-foot facility in Huntsville, Alabama, designed to provide law enforcement with immersive, hands-on training for modern cyber threats. Known as the Kinetic Cyber Range, this replica town features fully functional infrastructure, including a hospital, power company, courthouse, and commercial businesses. By mirroring the complexities of a real U.S. community, the facility allows investigators to practice responding to high-stakes scenarios, such as ransomware attacks on critical infrastructure, in a controlled and secure environment.

This initiative arrives at a critical juncture for national security. According to the FBI’s 2025 Internet Crime Report, cybercrime losses have surged to a record $20.9 billion, marking a 26% year-over-year increase. As ransomware continues to threaten essential services, the ability to train personnel in realistic, high-pressure environments is becoming an operational necessity. Since its opening in February 2025, the range has already hosted over 1,400 students, fostering collaboration between federal, state, and local agencies.

Beyond incident response, the facility serves as a hub for advanced digital forensics training. Investigators utilize the range to practice extracting data from encrypted devices, often employing specialized tools that exploit undisclosed software vulnerabilities. While these techniques are vital for building criminal cases, they remain a point of contention within the broader tech industry.
