International Israeli diplomat: ‘For us, nothing changed’ with new Iran leader by Ashleigh Fields - 03/10/26 6:24 PM ET by Ashleigh Fields - 03/10/26 6:24 PM ET Share ✕ LinkedIn LinkedIn Email Email NOW PLAYING Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon on Monday said that the selection of Iran’s new leader doesn’t change anything in regards to diplomatic relations between the countries. “Let me be clear, changing the man at the top does not change the regime. It is the same ideology, the same nuclear ambitions, the same ballistic missiles, the same terror proxies,” Danon said during a press conference in New York. “For us, nothing changed. My advice to Tehran’s new leadership: Look at what happened to those who thought they could threaten the U.S. and Israel,” he added. Allied Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s leader of nearly 37 years, was killed in the first wave of join U.S.-Israeli strikes on Feb. 28. On Sunday, Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba , was chosen to succeed him as the highest ranking leader in Tehran’s theocratic regime. He was elected by a body of 88 Iranian clerics known as the Assembly of Experts. President Trump has said he’s “ not happy ” with the new appointment and said the U.S. must approve Iran’s next leader. “They are wasting their time. Khamenei’s son is a lightweight. I have to be involved in the appointment, like with Delcy [Rodríguez] in Venezuela,” the president told Axios on Thursday. “Khamenei’s son is unacceptable to me. We want someone that will bring harmony and peace to Iran,” he later added. Khamenei’s selection was broadly seen as a victory for hard-liners in Iran, and a sign they will not capitulate to the U.S. and Israel.
