You might've had friends talk about your relationship behind your back — but what if it was millions of people criticizing you everywhere you turned?

Here are 11 celeb couples whose relationships allegedly fell apart because of fans and the media:

1.

Gifted costars and onscreen love interests Chris Evans and Jenny Slate dated from mid-2016 to February 2017. Then, they reconciled in November, but four months later, it was over for good. Jenny told Vulture, "Chris is a very, very famous person. For him to go to a restaurant is totally different than for me to go. I sit in my window, and I say, 'Hi' to people on the street. I have more freedom because I'm not Captain America. I'm mostly a cartoon. This is what I needed to do to feel normal. To be alone."

Most of their time was spent at home, but she was stressed over the internet "psychos" who constantly compared her new relationship to her marriage with Dean Fleischer Camp, whom she was separated from at the time. She said, "The stress that I saw [Chris] be put under, I've never seen that before, and he handled that really gracefully. He's not stressed. I was the person that was stressed."

There was also the fact that she was still processing the end of her marriage.

She said, "When Chris and I started dating, my husband and I had only been separated for a couple of months. Even though we had an amicable divorce, I think that's still something that you need to mourn. When you get separated from somebody that you actually care about, it is the destruction of a belief system. That is really, really sad. I just didn't have the tools. And I didn't think very hard about that, to be honest. I wanted to step into the light. Chris is a sunny, loving, really fun person, and I didn't really understand why I should be prudent.

... We’re not on bad terms, but we haven't really seen each other, spoken a lot. I think it's probably best. I'd love to be his friend one day, but we threw down pretty hard. No regrets, though. Ever."

Chris later told USA Today, "You know, relationships are tricky, there are [a] lot of moving pieces. But I am endlessly grateful for having met her. She will be in my life always. ... We were both rooting for this. She's an incredible human being, a very, very special person. We're all lucky she's so driven; she's going to make some amazing art in her life."

2.

In 2024, Karina — a K-pop star who's the leader of the girl group Aespa — confirmed her relationship with actor/model Lee Jae-wook. Some fans were reportedly so outraged that Karina was in a relationship that they had a truck with an electronic billboard bearing the message, "Do you not get enough love from your fans? Why did you choose to betray your fans? Please apologize directly. Otherwise, you'll see declining album sales and empty concert seats" drive by her agency's HQ. On Instagram, she posted a handwritten apology, writing, "I know very well how disappointed [my fans] who have supported me are and how upset you're thinking about the memories we shared together. I want to make up for my hurt fans from now on. I have always been sincere to you, and still each and every one of you are truly precious to me."

Karina offered fans her "sincerest apologies" and promised to "show more maturity and work harder going forward to all [her fans] without disappointment."

A mere five weeks later, they publicly announced their breakup. In a statement, Jae-wook's agency said that the couple broke up to focus on their careers, "leaving them as colleagues who support each other."

Many fans came out in his and Karina's defense, speaking out against rules and expectations that prevent many K-pop idols from publicly dating.

3.

Olympic gold medalist figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu married a private citizen in 2023, but they divorced only three months later. In a statement via Twitter (translated by Olympics.com), he said that he and his spouse had "overcome many obstacles together." However, for a long time, she couldn't even step out of the house because she'd be hounded by the media. He said, "Currently, various media outlets are slandering, stalking, and conducting unauthorized interviews and reports against my partner, who is a civilian, their relatives, and associates, as well as against my relatives and associates. Even in our living space, we are sometimes prowled by suspicious vehicles or persons, or suddenly accosted."

Even though they tried to work through the scary situations together, they were still afraid it would continue. He said, "However, due to my immatureness, it has been extremely difficult an
