President Trump on Monday received a McDonald’s delivery to the Oval Office to promote his “no tax on tips” law.
He received two bags of McDonald’s, a longtime fast-food favorite of the president’s, from a delivery person in a “DoorDash Grandma” shirt.
“The reason for this is the fact that I heard you picked up an extra $11,000 … because the tax bill was so big, the refund was the biggest you’ve ever had,” Trump said as he received the order, in a video shared by the White House.
“We should call it the ‘great big beautiful tax cut bill,’ because it’s tremendous amounts of money,” he added.
After Trump touted plans to eliminate taxes on tips along the 2024 campaign trail, Republicans included the provision in their massive tax and spending law signed last summer. It impacts federal income taxes for people working in jobs that have traditionally received tips, from bartenders to golf caddies, and allows some workers to deduct certain amounts of “qualified tips” per year from 2025 through 2028.
Trump on Monday proceeded to take questions from reporters on a range of topics, from the Iran war to an AI-generated image he shared of himself as Jesus, as the DoorDash delivery person stood beside him.
When the woman, who later identified herself as Sharon Simmons, was asked whether the White House included good tippers, Trump appeared to pull cash out of his pocket to hand it to her.
“Yes, very,” she said.
At one point, Trump directed a question to Simmons, asking, “Do you think that men should play in women’s sports?”
“I really don’t have an opinion on that. No, no, I’m here about no tax on tips,” she said.
At another point, he turned to Simmons during an answer on the Strait of Hormuz, where U.S. Central Command plans to blockade Iranian ports.
“The amazing things is, we don’t — can you believe this? — we don’t use the strait,” he said.
Simmons appeared to head into the Oval Office after Trump left the gaggle of reporters.
“With No Tax on Tips, Dashers across the U.S. saved hundreds of millions of dollars last year. DoorDash is proud to advocate on behalf of Dashers like Sharon and push for policies like No Tax on Tips because they deliver real impact to so many hardworking people and their families,” said Max Rettig, DoorDash’s global head of public policy, in a statement.
