King Charles’s US visit to go ahead as planned: Buckingham Palace

King Charles III’s upcoming trip to the U.S. is going ahead as planned after Saturday’s shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner, according to Buckingham Palace.

“Following discussions on both sides of the Atlantic through the day, and acting on advice of Government, we can confirm the State Visit by Their Majesties will proceed as planned,” a spokesperson for the palace said Sunday.

“The King and Queen are most grateful to all those who have worked at pace to ensure this remains the case and are looking forward to the Visit getting underway tomorrow,” the spokesperson said.

The British monarchy released the official itinerary for Charles and Queen Camilla’s upcoming trip to the U.S. earlier this month. The couple is set to go stateside for six days, starting Monday in Washington, D.C., and later traveling to New York City and Virginia.

A British government source told The Hill that the royal family’s appearances in the U.S. are under review by security services, but their plans were not being changed at the moment.

Saturday’s shooting at the annual WHCA dinner at the Washington Hilton, which was canceled as President Trump and other administration officials were evacuated from the event, has raised questions about security ahead of the royal family’s visit.

“First of all, King Charles is coming,” Trump said Sunday morning on Fox News’s “The Sunday Briefing.” And he’s a great guy. And we look forward to it. He’s really a fantastic person and a tremendous representative.”

The suspected shooter at Saturday’s dinner was likely targeting the president and other administration officials, per the White House.

“What was supposed to be a fun night at the @WHCA dinner with President Trump delivering jokes and celebrating free speech was hijacked by a depraved crazy person who sought to assassinate the President and kill as many top Trump administration officials as possible,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt wrote on the social platform X.

King Charles and Queen Camilla are visiting the U.S. amid heightened tensions between the two countries. In recent weeks, Trump has ramped up criticism of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer for not backing the U.S.-Israeli military operations in Iran and British reluctance to help the U.S. control the Strait of Hormuz.
