Seth Rogen has won widespread praise for his to-the-point comments about AI being used in creative industries as he promoted his new movie Tangles at Cannes Film Festival this week.

Tangles is an animated film inspired by writer Sarah Leavitt’s real-life experience of losing her mom to Alzheimer’s. Lauren Miller — who is married to Seth and also lost her mom to Alzheimer’s — co-produced the movie, which Seth stars in.

And the entire team takes pride in the fact that AI was not used in any aspect of the project. In an interview with Brut, Seth said: “It’s hand-drawn animation, every frame used has a human touch to it, which is great.”

As for the writing, Lauren said in reference to herself and Sarah: “[With AI], it’s only what’s fed into it, and I don’t know how you can ever feed in what we went through. Just whatever is inside of us that got in there while we were caring for our mothers in this painful way, to me, translates to the fact that when the line was drawn by a hand, that line was moved through someone who felt feelings instead of just, like, a program.”

Elsewhere in the same interview, Seth spoke passionately about his thoughts when it comes to using AI in writing, saying: “I don’t understand what it’s supposed to do. Every time I see a video on Instagram that’s like: ‘Hollywood is cooked,’ what follows is the most stupid dog shit I’ve ever seen in my life.”

“If your instinct is to use AI and not go through that process, you shouldn’t be a writer,” he pointedly added. “Because then you’re not writing. Go do something else.”

Seth — who won a ton of awards just this year for his TV series The Studio, which he wrote and co-created — then pointed out: “And if you don’t want to go through the process, you shouldn’t be a writer. Like, the whole idea of a tool that makes me write less is not appealing to me because I like writing.”

And the people of the internet are inclined to agree, with Seth’s comments proving to be incredibly popular across social media. One Reddit user echoed: “If your instinct is to use AI you shouldn't be in a creative industry at all.”

“People pretending like AI just streamlines and elevates their own creativity are living in delusion. Maybe you're just not that good! Let some people who can create without AI have a shot if you can’t,” one more added, while somebody else noted: “Common Rogen W. What is someone saying about their own skills (or lack thereof) when relying on AI for creative output?”

One more said of AI: “I think it is also an elevator for more nepotism if they don't even need a talent, AI can just make it for them.”

While another poignantly asked: “Absolutely! Will future generations think that way is the question that worries me. If you're born into / grow up in a time where AI is already ubiquitous, will you still value creativity/artistry as something that comes from the human mind and spirit?”
