President Trump on Saturday released a video and two photos in connection with a shooting at the White House Correspondents Dinner, not long after the president himself was evacuated from the event.
Trump shared two separate posts on Truth Social with photos of the suspected shooter with his wrists bound behind his back, shirtless and laying facedown on the ground.
In another post, the president shared a video of what appears to be security footage from a computer monitor. The footage showed U.S. Secret Service officers standing near a magnetometer, and then an individual can be seen bolting through the areas as officers draw and point their handguns toward where the individual ran.
The Secret Service said the incident took place near screening detectors that people must walk through before entering the annual event.
Trump later told reporters at a press conference at the White House that the suspected shooter “charged a security checkpoint armed with many weapons.”
“He started running from 50 yards and he was fast,” the president said. “He was like a blur on tape.”
Trump noted that one Secret Service officer was shot but the bullet struck their protective vest. He said the officer was in good spirits. He told reporters that the suspect was a California resident.
The Hill has not yet verified the identity of the alleged shooter.
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro said the suspect will be arraigned on Monday and faces charges of using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon.
Three or four loud bangs were heard, according to reporters from The Hill who attended the dinner. Guests immediately dove under their tables to take cover, before the president, first lady and members of the Cabinet were rushed out of the Washington Hilton, where the dinner has been held for decades.
Officers donned in tactical gear rushed to the stage and removed the president, Vice President Vance and others from the room. Reporters and editors in attendance dove to the floor, with many hiding under tables. Guests grabbed trays to give themselves cover, while women removed their shoes, according to Hill reporters at the event.
Anthony Guglielmi, U.S. Secret Service chief of communications, said in a statement posted to social media that “one individual is in custody. The condition of those involved is not yet known, and law enforcement is actively assessing the situation.”
Both Trump and White House Correspondents Association president Weija Jiang said the dinner will be rescheduled in the next 30 days.
