Planet of the Apes (1968). The plot: After being kept in hypersleep during a long expedition into deep space, an astronaut crew crash-lands into the 40th century on a planet where a highly intelligent non-human ape species is dominant, and humans are enslaved.

The Twist: In an attempt to prove that he's not from their planet, astronaut George Taylor (Charlton Heston) stumbles upon the ruins of the Statue of Liberty on a beach, and realizes that the "alien" planet he thought he had crash-landed on is actually Earth, hundreds of years in the future.

The Empire Strikes Back (1980). The plot: After the destruction of the Death Star, the Galactic Empire overpowers the Rebel Alliance. Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) begins training with Jedi Master Yoda, while Darth Vader and bounty hunter Boba Fett pursue Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford) across the galaxy.

The Twist: Alfred Borden's (Christian Bale) magic trick, "The Transported Man," is possible because he has a twin brother. Robert Angier (Hugh Jackman), however, uses a teleportation device built by Nikola Tesla that duplicates him rather than transports him. Each time he performs his "Transported Man" trick, he creates a clone of himself and kills one version (usually the original) by drowning to keep the illusion a secret.

Looper (2012). The plot: In 2074, when the mob wants to get rid of someone, the target is sent back in time, where a hired gun awaits. One of the hit men, Joe, learns the mob wants to 'close the loop' by sending back his future self for assassination, and is being directed to do so by The Rainmaker.

The twist: Young Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) realizes that Old Joe's (Bruce Willis) killing of Cid's mother is the catalyst that creates the Rainmaker. Young Joe kills himself to erase Old Joe, sacrificing his own life to prevent the Rainmaker’s rise.

The twist: Ava, the AI, reveals that her creator, Nathan (Oscar Isaac), designed this entire scenario to see if she could manipulate a human. She then uses Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson) to gain her freedom, revealing that she was the true examiner, not the subject. Ava abandons Caleb, leaving him trapped to die.
