As you may have seen, Robert Pattinson and Zendaya are currently in the midst of a press tour for their new movie, The Drama, which will be in theaters this Friday.

In the film, the stars play “a happily engaged couple” who “get put to the test when an unexpected revelation sends their wedding week off the rails” — and as you might expect, a lot of the promo has heavily leaned into the relationship theme.

This included some of the cast solving imaginary dilemmas on the Relationship Hotline in a YouTube video for the movie’s production company, A24, with Rob and Zendaya joined by their castmates Mamoudou Athie and Alana Haim for the game.

One of the dilemmas that the group was posed has since gone viral on social media, with many users leaping to defend Rob’s honor after the three others shot down his advice.

The caller, “Erica” from Las Vegas, phoned in to ask for advice about not liking the woman she is supposed to be a bridesmaid for in two weeks. She said: “We have been friends for a very long time, but I am at my wits’ end. I’ve even had all these fantasies about her being mean to me on her wedding day, and me just leaving because I find it to be so impossible and toxic. Lately, I’ve been thinking really poorly about myself because I agreed to do this.”

Mamoudou led the response by saying: “It’s time to have a friend breakup,” which Zendaya and Alana immediately agreed with. But Rob was on the other side of the fence, starting out by joking: “But you never know who you’re gonna meet [at the wedding], it might be fun!”

But when Alana doubled down on the friend breakup, saying that a “conversation” needed to be had, Rob was visibly shocked by the fact that all three of his costars felt this way. He asked: “You think the correct advice is to tell a woman who is getting married that, by the way, I can’t be your bridesmaid because I don’t like you?!”

“Yes!” the other three insisted, with Alana saying it could be said in a “more poetic way.” Zendaya then asked: “What’s the alternative? Just don’t show up?” But Rob insisted: “Just say you’re sick!”

“That’s crazy,” Zendaya, Alana, and Mamoudou retorted, with Rob asking: “How is that crazy?! That’s, like, a normal human being thing to do.” But Zendaya concluded: “Not good character, my friend.”

And when this clip was posted to X, social media users were overwhelmingly on Rob’s side, with many pointing out that it would be cruel to broach a friend breakup with somebody just two weeks before their wedding day, where you are supposed to be the bridesmaid. One popular quote tweet of the video reads: “The way Rob is so right. Wedding planning is so insanely stressful it is actively mean to do that. Say you have food poisoning.”

The same user then said of Zendaya: “Zendaya is too manicured and media trained to say ‘pls just do the right thing and lie.’”

Another incredibly viral tweet adds: “look i’m surprised too but rob had the only normal response to this,” while somebody else wrote: “rob is the only normal one because initiating a friendship breakup 2 weeks before someone's wedding automatically makes you the bad guy.”

“they’re gasping at robert but he’s right,” one more quipped, while somebody else concluded: “saying yes in the first place is scary but telling her you don’t like her before her wedding is crazier.”
