NewportFilm Outdoors Announces 2026 Summer Documentary Series
NewportFilm Outdoors has officially unveiled its 2026 summer programming, a seasonal staple that brings documentary cinema to the historic landscapes of Newport, Rhode Island. Running weekly on Thursdays from June 25 through August 27, the festival utilizes the unique backdrop of Aquidneck Island, hosting screenings on the grounds of iconic mansions and local public parks. Beyond the films, the event series distinguishes itself by integrating live musical performances and interactive Q&A sessions with filmmakers.
The festival will open with the documentary "Mary Oliver: Saved by the Beauty of the World," directed by Sasha Waters. This intimate exploration of the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet’s life and work has already garnered attention on the festival circuit, including screenings at True/False and DOC NYC. The opening night event will feature a special appearance by "American Masters" executive producer Michael Kantor, with a post-screening discussion moderated by Rhode Island poet laureate and Brown University professor Colin Channer.
This year’s lineup reflects NewportFilm’s commitment to diverse storytelling, spanning subjects from legendary sports figures to the cultural impact of organizations like the Girl Scouts. By blending high-profile documentary subjects with the scenic, community-focused atmosphere of Newport, the festival continues to serve as a vital cultural touchstone. For both local audiences and visiting cinephiles, the series offers a rare opportunity to engage with non-fiction narratives in an immersive, open-air environment that prioritizes community dialogue and artistic appreciation.
