Saturday Night Live star Colin Jost revealed Thursday that the sketch show’s writers recently came up with a cold open idea involving Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, only to scrap it as “too ridiculous.” But then Hegseth, whom Jost has portrayed on the show, ended up doing almost the exact same thing “for real” just two weeks later, he told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show.

Jost recalled pitching ideas in the writers room: “I was like, "Would it be funny if Hegseth just did that Bible verse that they have in Pulp Fiction?" Remember, from Ezekiel, Samuel L. Jackson?”

He said the idea was deemed “too ridiculous” and feared it “would take up all this time in the cold open.” Then he noted: “And then he for real did it, like two weeks later.”

Hegseth did indeed deliver a prayer at the Pentagon in April that echoed one of Samuel L. Jackson’s monologues from the 1994 film Pulp Fiction.

“And I was like, ‘Well, the good news is, I’m being surveilled, so that’s a relief,’” joked Jost.
