Neon has officially scheduled the U.S. theatrical release of 'Hope,' the highly anticipated sci-fi feature from acclaimed South Korean director Na Hong-jin, for September 9. The film, which garnered significant attention during its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, marks Na’s return to feature filmmaking after a decade-long hiatus. Following a polarized but enthusiastic critical reception, the film is being positioned as a potential cult classic, celebrated for its technical mastery and intense, genre-bending narrative.

Set near the Korean Demilitarized Zone, the story follows a local police force and a group of hunters as they confront a mysterious, destructive creature. The film features a star-studded ensemble cast, including Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, and 'Squid Game' breakout Hoyeon, alongside Hollywood actors Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander. The production reunites Na with cinematographer Hong Kyung-pyo, known for his work on 'Parasite,' and features a score by composer Michael Abels, further signaling the project's high-caliber creative pedigree.

Beyond its artistic merits, 'Hope' represents a significant commercial milestone for Korean cinema. With a record-breaking 200-territory pre-sale deal facilitated by producer Plus M Entertainment, the film has already recouped nearly half of its production budget. As the first installment in a planned franchise, 'Hope' serves as a litmus test for the global appetite for large-scale, auteur-driven Korean genre cinema. Its performance in Western markets will likely influence future investment strategies for international co-productions and high-budget genre projects.
