Greg Abbott (R) and Democratic state Rep. Gina Hinojosa were projected to win their respective primaries for Texas governor on Tuesday, setting up a November showdown. Abbott is seeking a fourth term leading the red state, which hasn’t elected a Democratic governor since 1990. Recent polling has signaled an uphill fight for Hinojosa, though she’s come within single digits of the incumbent on the campaign trail. A University of Houston survey this week found Abbott up with 49 percent to the Democrat’s 42 percent in a hypothetical general election, and a University of Texas at Tyler poll found Abbott with 49 percent to Hinojosa’s 41 percent. Cook Political Report rates the race as “solid Republican,” though some operatives in the state think Hinojosa could get a boost from Democratic momentum in the marquee Texas Senate race. Both candidates were expected to sail through crowded primaries on Tuesday, avoiding a runoff. Add as preferred source on Google Tags Greg Abbott Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media Inc.
