LACMA and Timid Magazine Partner for New Chinese Fashion Exhibition
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has announced a collaborative partnership with Timid Magazine to celebrate the launch of its latest exhibition, "Fashioning Chinese Women: Empire to Modernity." Opening on June 14, the exhibit explores the evolution of Chinese women’s fashion from the final years of the Qing Dynasty in 1911 through the onset of the Cultural Revolution in 1966. The showcase will feature over 70 ensembles, highlighting the transition from traditional embroidered robes to the iconic, sleek silhouettes of the 1930s qipao and 1960s cheongsam.
A notable highlight of the exhibition is the inclusion of custom mannequin heads designed by acclaimed fashion designer Jason Wu, which serve to elevate the presentation of these historical garments. The collection draws from sources in Shanghai, Hong Kong, and the United States, providing a comprehensive look at how clothing functioned as a vital medium for identity, political expression, and resistance during a period of intense social upheaval in China.
Beyond the historical significance of the garments, the opening event represents a strategic effort by LACMA to engage with contemporary Asian creative communities. By partnering with Timid Magazine, an outlet dedicated to Asian talent in entertainment and culture, the museum aims to foster cross-generational dialogue and amplify underrepresented narratives. This initiative underscores a growing trend among major cultural institutions to align their programming with modern platforms that prioritize diverse voices and cultural representation.
The exhibition will be open to the public from June 14 through October 12. By bridging the gap between historical scholarship and modern cultural advocacy, LACMA is positioning this exhibit not just as a display of craftsmanship, but as a platform for exploring the intersection of fashion, gender, and history.
