(NEXSTAR) – Thousands of tins of infant formula have been recalled over a toxin that could lead to illness among babies who consume it, according to a notice posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
In the notice, shared Saturday, the FDA said a2 Milk Company of Colorado had issued a voluntary recall of three batches of its a2 Platinum Premium USA formula, advertised for children who are 12 months old and younger.
Cereulide, a toxin created by some strains of the Bacillus cereus bacterium, was found to be present in the formula, the notice warns. The toxin, which is not eliminated even when the formula is prepared with hot water, can make infants sick within as little as 30 minutes.
Symptoms, which usually develop within six hours, are generally gastrointestinal, including nausea and vomiting. While these symptoms can pass within a day, the FDA warns that infants are at a greater risk and may experience complications, like dehydration, that could require medical care.
There have been no confirmed reports of illnesses linked to the formula, which was sold through the company’s website, as well as on Amazon and in Meijer stores. According to the FDA, the imported product was part of Operation Fly Formula, a Biden administration effort that brought in shipments to respond to a nationwide formula shortage spurred by safety concerns at manufacturer Abbott’s Michigan factory.
Importation rights for a2’s formula ended in December, but consumers may still have impacted tins. Of the more than 63,000 tins produced, it’s believed that roughly 16,400 were sold to consumers.
The recall impacts three lots of a2 Platinium Premium infant formula 0-12 months Milk-based powder with Iron, which were all sold in 31.7-ounce tins with these batch numbers and use-by dates:
- Batch number 2210269454 with date 7/15/2026
- Batch number 2210324609 with date 1/21/2027
- Batch number 2210321712 with date 1/15/2027
These dates and numbers can be found on the bottom of the tins.

The cereulide, which was found during testing done in response to new guidance from authorities in New Zealand, is believed to have come from an ingredient in the formula.
If you have any of the impacted tins, you are advised not to use them. Instead, you can throw it away or return it for a full refund.
If your child does become ill after consuming the formula, you’re encouraged to contact your health care provider. More details, including how to contact a2 Platinum, can be found on the FDA’s website.
Last month, the FDA reported that recent testing results found that the nation’s infant formula supply is largely safe from contaminants, The Hill previously reported.
