Shanghai International Film Festival Selects 'Afterpiece' as Opening Film
The 28th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) has announced that the Hong Kong drama 'Afterpiece' will serve as its opening film. Directed by newcomer Keane T.K. Wong and produced by industry veteran Derek Yee, the film explores the blurred lines between reality and performance. It follows a struggling stage director, played by Stephen Fung, whose life unravels as he attempts to mount a new production while navigating personal betrayals and a complex relationship with a young actress. The cast also features notable Hong Kong talents including Chrissie Chau, Myolie Wu, and Angela Yuen.
'Afterpiece' is a significant product of the Hong Kong government’s Directors’ Succession Scheme, an initiative designed to foster emerging talent by pairing them with established mentors. By selecting this film for the opening slot, SIFF highlights the importance of institutional support in revitalizing the regional film industry. The collaboration between a first-time director and a seasoned producer like Yee—known for his acclaimed work in both crime dramas and romantic features—underscores the festival's commitment to bridging the gap between legacy filmmaking and new creative voices.
Beyond the opening premiere, the festival has solidified its status as a major international hub by unveiling a high-profile jury for its Golden Goblet Awards. Chaired by legendary actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai, the jury panel features a diverse group of global filmmakers, including Guan Hu, Déa Kulumbegashvili, and Fernanda Valadez. This international representation, alongside specialized juries for documentary and animation, signals SIFF's continued efforts to maintain a competitive, global standard in its programming. The festival is scheduled to run from June 12 to June 21, with the full lineup expected to be released in early June.
