Indian production house Iroller Media has entered a strategic partnership with Helsinki-based Norse Key Productions to bring the drama 'Bicycle Thief' to audiences in the United States and Europe. This agreement marks a significant milestone for the Ahmedabad-based studio, representing its first major foray into Western distribution markets under the guidance of Norse Key founder Maria Kivinen.

Directed by Darshan Ashwin Trivedi, the film is a poignant exploration of social injustice based on a real-life incident from 1993. The narrative follows Savji, a man from a marginalized Dalit community who attempts to escape bonded labor by purchasing a second-hand bicycle to secure employment. His life takes a tragic turn when he is wrongfully arrested for theft, leading to a harrowing two-day ordeal in police custody. The film employs a dual-timeline structure, contrasting Savji’s past struggle with a modern-day filmmaker’s quest to uncover the truth behind this largely forgotten historical tragedy.

This distribution deal is significant as it highlights the growing global appetite for regional Indian cinema that addresses complex socio-political themes. By securing a Western release, 'Bicycle Thief' moves beyond local borders to engage international audiences with a narrative rooted in Dalit history and human rights. Trivedi’s decade-long commitment to researching the case underscores the film's role as a piece of investigative storytelling, potentially elevating the visibility of underrepresented historical narratives on the global stage.
