Former Vice President Mike Pence on Sunday said the recent U.S. conflict with Iran “had to happen,” shortly after the conflict stretched into its second month.
“It had to happen. Iran has been at war with America and our most cherished ally, Israel, for 47 years. They’ve claimed the lives of American service members all the way back to the attack on the Marine Corps barracks throughout the Iraq War through their proxies,” Pence told Fox News’s Brian Kilmeade on “One Nation.”
In a recent poll, a majority of Americans thought the U.S. military’s use of force against Iran was a mistake.
The Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos survey discovered that 61 percent of American respondents said they believed the Trump administration was wrong in starting its military operation against Iran in late February.
The Iranian military has throttled shipping through the Strait of Hormuz amid the U.S.-Israeli conflict, resulting in higher oil and gas prices in the U.S. and around the world. The average price of a gallon of gas in the U.S. on Monday was about $4.46, according to AAA, up from about $3.17 last year.
President Trump on Sunday said that the U.S. would help in freeing ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
“For the good of Iran, the Middle East, and the United States, we have told these Countries that we will guide their Ships safely out of these restricted Waterways, so that they can freely and ably get on with their business,” Trump said on Truth Social.
Pence lauded the ship-freeing effort on Sunday on the social platform X.
“Strong Move Mr. President. God Bless All Our Troops Engaged in Project Freedom,” Pence said in his post, referencing the name of the effort.
