Around the time that he released his debut album “Love/Hate” in 2007, The-Dream had planted his flag as one of R&B’s most promising futurists. Amid the glut of ringtone rap and R&B-rap hybrids ruling radio, Terius “The-Dream” Gesteelde-Diamant established himself as a leader in pushing the sound of modern pop into strange new places, teaming with his production partner Tricky Stewart to create some of the most canonical hits of this century including Rihanna’s “Umbrella,” Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” and Mariah Carey’s “Touch My Body” — all songs that sidestepped convention to help usher in a creative renaissance in mainstream pop.
