Popular Sitcoms That Haven't Been Rebooted Or Revived

With the Malcolm in the Middle revival and Scrubs back with another season, it seems inevitable that classic sitcoms from the 2000s are making a comeback. While I’m definitely more of a fan of keeping things as they are, I’m also not completely against a spin-off, reboot, or revival of some kind if it’s done incredibly well. I even compiled a list of past series that got that revival treatment and whether they were worth watching!
Given the long list of iconic sitcoms they could build new shows off of, I already know Hollywood will continue to rely on nostalgia. Still, I am surprised the following shows haven't received a spin-off, reboot, or revival of some kind.
1.
Seinfeld
NBC
I am actually really shocked that Seinfeld doesn’t have a follow-up of any kind. I can totally see a revival series featuring Jerry going through some kind of third-quarter life crisis, trying to figure out what to do now that he’s retired from being a stand-up comedian with adult-aged kids. Maybe Jerry could be planning his big comeback stage? I mean, this series can practically write itself.
2.
Parks & Recreation
NBC
Parks & Recreation probably had the most satisfying, perfectly tied-up ending to a popular sitcom, so part of me is happy that it hasn’t been touched. However, the other part of me misses the crew’s chaotic dynamics. I can totally see a spin-off featuring a new parks & recs office in a different town, with small cameos from the original cast here and there.
3.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine
NBC
Another series I could see getting a spin-off rather than an entire reboot. The Brooklyn Nine-Nine universe is so large that it would be easy to come up with a new story tied to the original. For example, a spin-off about a young Captain Holt coming up through the NYPD, or even a series set in a different precinct, would work so well! Seriously, the possibilities are endless! I just need another cold open where suspects sing a '90s boy band hit.
4.
Cheers
NBC
I know Frasier is a direct spin-off from Cheers, which actually got their own revival, but I personally would like to see the bar where everyone knows your name come back to life. Whether it’s a new set of regulars and a new bar owner or Ted Danson making a comeback as Sam Malone, I would love to see Cheers running again and be a place where everyone can escape their problems.
5.
The Nanny
CBS
I don’t think this series needs a revival, but I’m actually surprised that there isn’t at least a reboot with the same premise. A brand-new series featuring a modern live-in nanny in a rich family household seems very easy to recreate. Especially with this new generation of tech billionaires and social media influencers, having a nanny in these kinds of households would be comedy gold. Or I can see this taking the Bel-Air approach and becoming a dramatized version instead. Either way, it feels like a missed opportunity here.
6.
The Golden Girls
NBC
This series did get a few spin-offs, but they were released so long ago that a reboot now seems possible. Of course, no one could ever replace the brilliance of the original squad, but I wouldn’t be mad at the idea of a new set of “golden girls” dealing with this era filled with AI and everyone glued to their phones. Now, I don’t know if there is a chance that this could happen, but I can see it as worth considering.
7.
Home Improvement
ABC
This one is harder to envision getting a revival of any kind, given issues with some of the original cast, but I believe it’s still possible. I could see a spin-off focusing more on the Tool Time show, where producers want to revive the show — see what I did there — and bring back Tim Taylor and Al Borland as hosts. Of course, Tim Allen has been busy with his newest show and voicing Buzz in Toy Story 5, so I can understand why this revival hasn’t been a priority.
8.
Modern Family
ABC
This series was very long, running for a whopping 11 seasons! Even with its long run, the show managed to have a very unsatisfying ending. Personally, I felt like most of the characters didn’t get any real proper closure. More than anything, I want justice for Haley, who had such a cool character growth moment in the mid-seasons, only to fall out of existence in the last couple of seasons. A revival with Haley taking the center stage as the new matriarch just feels like a great opportunity here.
9.
Married…With Children
Fox
Before Ed O’Neill became the no-nonsense patriarch Jay Pritchett in Modern Family, he played another iconic misanthropic father, Al Bundy in Married…With Children. While significant time has passed since the series aired, a reboot featuring a different dysfunctional family wouldn’t be completely out there. Especially since, in this day and age, being “married with children” looks a little different than it did in the ’8
