Conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt called the reported U.S.-Iran draft agreement a “terrible deal” on Wednesday, two days after President Trump appeared on his show.
The president suddenly paused the U.S. Navy’s “Project Freedom” operation in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday evening amid reports that the two sides were nearing a framework to end the months-long conflict.
Axios reported Wednesday morning that adoption of this one-page memorandum would declare an end to the war and initiate a 30-day period for more detailed negotiations between the two sides.
“This would be a terrible deal,” Hewitt wrote on social media in response to the Axios report.
“I hope the terms of any deal would be significantly stricter: No enrichment, ever. HEU to us stat,” he continued, referring to highly enriched uranium.
“No more proxies. Turn on the internet. President Trump never gives up leverage. Why would he start now with #Iran on the ropes?”
Hewitt added that the U.S. accepting these reported peace deal terms “would be snatching defeat from jaws of victory.”
The proposed deal would involve enforcing a moratorium on Iran’s nuclear enrichment process, requiring the U.S. to lift its sanctions on Iran and easing both countries’ hold over the strait, according to Axios.
The outlet reported Wednesday morning that U.S. officials expect Iran to respond to the 14-point proposal in the next 48 hours.
The president threatened Tuesday evening to resume attacks on Iran if this deal falls through, but his decision to put “Project Freedom” on hold indicates that his administration is becoming more open to negotiating with Tehran to end the conflict.
Trump wrote on Truth Social that he based the decision to pause the naval operation on “the request of Pakistan and other Countries, the tremendous Military Success that we have had during the Campaign against the Country of Iran and, additionally, the fact that Great Progress has been made toward a Complete and Final Agreement with Representatives of Iran.”
In a Monday interview on “The Hugh Hewitt Show,” the president told the radio host that the U.S. had “already won” in its operations against Iran.
Hewitt urged the president not to “take the wedge on Iran,” a reference to the president’s love of golfing.
“Hit for the green. Go for the green on Iran,” Hewitt told the president in the Monday interview.
