Thailand is making a strategic push to formalize its position as a global entertainment powerhouse with the announcement of the inaugural Bangkok International Content Market (BICM) 2026. Scheduled for July 20-22 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, the event is a collaborative initiative between the Creative Economy Agency (CEA) and the Department of International Trade Promotion. By providing a dedicated B2B platform for film, series, and animation, the government aims to transition from merely hosting international productions to becoming a primary exporter of domestic intellectual property.

The launch of BICM 2026 is a cornerstone of the broader "Content Thailand" initiative, a government-led soft-power campaign designed to capitalize on the country's growing reputation in the streaming era. With major platforms like Netflix investing roughly $200 million in Thai content between 2021 and 2024, and the global success of niche genres like Thai "Y-series" (boys' love dramas), the market seeks to institutionalize this momentum. Organizers are targeting over 80 international investors and streaming services to participate in a program that includes a pitching competition for regional projects and a massive exhibition floor featuring over 500 booths.

This move places Thailand in direct competition with established regional hubs like Hong Kong’s Filmart, Singapore’s Asia TV Forum, and Busan’s Asian Contents & Film Market. However, the economic incentive for the country is clear: CEA data suggests that every baht invested in the film and broadcasting sector generates approximately 1.8 baht in economic value. By fostering a sustainable ecosystem for co-productions and international sales, Thailand is positioning its creative sector as a vital engine for long-term national economic growth, moving beyond simple production services to high-value content ownership.
