Graham says South Carolina should consider redistricting after Virginia vote

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said Wednesday that South Carolina should think about redistricting after Virginia voters backed a plan to do so in their own state Tuesday.

“After the Virginia Democrats’ efforts to redistrict in order to increase Democrat seats in the House of Representatives, South Carolina should consider fighting fire with fire,” Graham wrote in a Wednesday afternoon post on the social platform X.

“I would encourage South Carolina’s next Republican governor and the Republican legislature to seriously look at what our state’s response should be to Democrats in Virginia,” he added.

Virginia voters on Tuesday approved a redistricting plan supported by Democrats, giving the go-ahead to a new congressional map that could give the party as many as four seats in the midterm elections.

Democratic lawmakers had asked Virginia voters to approve a state constitutional amendment that would temporarily bypass the state’s redistricting commission and switch up maps in the middle of the decade.

The new map widens the 6-5 Democratic advantage in the state’s congressional delegation to a 10-1 edge.

On Wednesday, President Trump responded to the approval of the redistricting plan, claiming the results were “rigged” without pointing to evidence.

“A RIGGED ELECTION TOOK PLACE LAST NIGHT IN THE GREAT COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA!” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

“All day long Republicans were winning, the Spirit was unbelievable, until the very end when, of course, there was a massive ‘Mail In Ballot Drop!’ Where have I heard that before — And the Democrats eked out another Crooked Victory! Six to five goes to ten to one, and yet the Presidential Election in November was very close to a 50-50 split,” he continued.

On Wednesday, a Virginia judge blocked the state from certifying the referendum results, ruling that both the referendum and the bill that triggered it were unconstitutional.

Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones on Wednesday said his office would appeal the decision.
