Iranian officials are reviewing the latest U.S. peace proposal to end the more than two-month conflict and address Tehran’s nuclear program, a day after President Trump threatened Tehran it would face renewed bombing if it rejects the deal.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio also met with Pope Leo XIV, who has been a vocal critic of the war, at the Vatican early Thursday.

Trump in the early afternoon will also host Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at the White House. The meeting comes as the U.S. president has been a loyal ally of former leader Jair Bolsonaro.

The Trump administration hit Brazil with a 50 percent tariff last July in part over the country’s prosecution of Bolsonaro. The embattled former president was sentenced to 27 years in prison for staging a coup to remain in power after losing the 2022 election.

On Capitol Hill, a proposal to spend $1 billion in taxpayer money on security for Trump’s $400 million White House ballroom has created a political landmine in the Senate debate over the budget reconciliation package to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol.

Trump will also participate in executive time and closed door meetings on Thursday.
