President Trump on Thursday warned that the U.S. will “knock” Iran “a lot harder, and more violently” after U.S. forces intercepted Iranian attacks on three American destroyers as they exited the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran launched several missiles, drones and small boats at the USS Truxtun, the USS Rafael Peralta and the USS Mason, U.S. Central Command said in a statement. None of the warships were struck, with U.S. forces intercepting the incoming threats.
Trump confirmed the destroyers’ transit out of the strait in a Truth Social post, where he accused Iran of being “led by LUNATICS, and if they had the chance to use a Nuclear Weapon, they would do it, without question.”
“But they’ll never have that opportunity and, just like we knocked them out again today, we’ll knock them out a lot harder, and a lot more violently, in the future, if they don’t get their Deal signed, FAST!” the president wrote. “Our three Destroyers, with their wonderful Crews, will now rejoin our Naval Blockade, which is truly a ‘Wall of Steel.'”
U.S. forces carried out attacks at Iran’s Qeshm port and Bandar Abbas, a port city, Fox News chief national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin said on the social platform X. The strikes come two days after Iran fired 15 ballistic and cruise missiles at the United Arab Emirates’ Fujairah Port.
Trump told ABC News that the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran was still intact despite the attacks. He called the U.S. attack a “love tap.”
Both countries are engaged in talks over a memorandum of understanding that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz to all commercial traffic and to allow the two nations to hash out a more comprehensive peace deal.
Trump had called off “Project Freedom,” an initiative to defend cargo vessels passing through the strait from Iranian attacks, after Saudi Arabia shut down its airspace for the operation. Reports emerged that the U.S. and Iran were closer to an agreement to end the war hours after that pause went into effect.
One of the notable demands that the U.S. has had since early in the conflict is an end to Iran’s nuclear program, which the country has insisted has been developed for peaceful purposes.
Three Iranian officials close to the latest round of mediated negotiations told The New York Times that the U.S. wants Iran to commit to handing over its stockpile of enriched uranium, close its three nuclear facilities and pause on enriching uranium for 20 years.
Iran’s counterproposal would have its uranium diluted and sent to a third country, possibly Russia, and it would put a pause on its uranium enrichment for 10 to 15 years.
