GitLab Cuts 14% of Workforce to Pivot Infrastructure Toward AI Agents

GitLab has announced a 14% reduction in its workforce, affecting approximately 350 employees as part of a strategic restructuring. This move follows the company’s decision to exit 22 countries and streamline management layers. The layoffs are framed as a necessary pivot to reallocate resources toward research and development, specifically to modernize the platform’s infrastructure to handle the massive surge in traffic generated by AI-driven development workflows.

CEO Bill Staples highlighted that current developer infrastructure is struggling to keep pace with "agentic workloads," which operate at a machine scale far beyond traditional human-led development. GitLab is currently undertaking a generational rebuild of its core systems to support 100x growth, partnering with an external AI lab to develop APIs optimized for context retrieval and agent orchestration. This technical overhaul aims to address the systemic bottlenecks that are currently challenging major developer platforms across the industry.

This restructuring reflects a broader trend in the technology sector, where companies are simultaneously reporting record revenues while aggressively cutting staff. Despite the layoffs, GitLab reported a strong 23% year-over-year revenue increase to $264 million, maintaining high gross margins.
