Janet Yang, the veteran producer and former president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, has been appointed as the new chairwoman of the Committee of 100 (C100). Founded in 1990 by luminaries such as I.M. Pei and Yo-Yo Ma, the organization is a non-profit dedicated to fostering U.S.-China relations and advocating for the full integration and recognition of Chinese Americans within the fabric of American society. Yang succeeds former Washington Governor and U.S. Ambassador to China, Gary Locke, who held the position for five years.

Yang brings a wealth of experience to the role, having spent decades bridging cultural and professional gaps between the East and West. Her career includes producing acclaimed works such as 'The Joy Luck Club' and 'The People vs. Larry Flynt,' as well as serving as the first Asian American president of the Academy. During her tenure at the Academy, she was instrumental in diversifying the organization’s global membership, a skill set that aligns closely with C100’s mission to elevate the Chinese American narrative.

This transition is significant given the current geopolitical climate, which is often characterized by strained international relations. Yang’s appointment signals a strategic pivot toward proactive engagement and cultural diplomacy. By leveraging her extensive background in media and international collaboration, she aims to counter divisive rhetoric by fostering person-to-person connections. Her leadership is expected to empower the next generation of Chinese American leaders, ensuring their contributions to public service, science, and the arts are recognized as integral to the American experience.
